Fostering democracy in the EU – The role of education

Listen to the full event here:

Education is a key driver in empowering a solid European identity and protecting European democracy and values. With the rise of populism and euroscepticism across the EU, many say that the need to promote democratic culture through education and inform European citizens of their rights has never been greater.

Consequently, teachers play a fundamental role in building a strong European identity and strengthening our democracy. It is argued that they should be supported and empowered through measures to create an open learning culture and deal with diverse learning groups in order to teach civic competences, transmit Europe’s shared heritage, communicate common values, and act as role models for learners.

Furthermore, especially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is increasingly obvious that teachers should be equipped with new digital teaching and learning methods. It is also important to create digital learning platforms focused on democratic culture, which would be useful tools for teachers to promote EU values.

In the framework of the EU-funded project Teachers4Europe, rewatch this EURACTIV Virtual Conference to learn more about how policy makers can support new and innovative citizenship education initiatives across Europe. Discussed questions  included:

– How to promote democratic awareness through education across the EU?
– How to provide teachers with adequate learning tools to promote democratic culture?
– What is the role of new digital technologies in achieving these goals?
