Merkel signals willingness to compromise with Greece

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters upon her arrival at the informal EU summit in Brussels on Thursday that she was looking forward to her first meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

The topic of Greece was certainly to play a role during the Council, Merkel said, “albeit only marginally”.

The European Union’s tradition was always to work for a compromise, Merkel explained. “One accepts a compromise when benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Germany is ready for that. However, it must also be said that Europe’s credibility naturally depends on us respecting rules and being reliable with each other.”
