Responding to Greek anti-bailout party Syriza’s election victory on Sunday, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble said on Tuesday that “rules and agreements need to be complied with.”

Speaking to the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, Schäuble warned that failing to stick to the rules can undermine confidence.

“When we make the rules more flexible, we are always at the limit of what can be achieved in terms of law and confidence of people in the agreements, because if you can’t rely upon agreements its quite difficult,” Schäuble said.
