Sefcovic: Lifting of sanctions ‘should be used for more business deals with Iran’

European Commission Vice-President, Maroš Šefčovič said on Wednesday (20 July) that the institution “wants to make sure that the lifting of sanctions could be used for exploring the development of commercial ties” with Iran.

The Commission and other member states were questioned by former commissioners Karel de Gucht and Louis Michel, who said Europe should condition any relations with Iran on “a clear progress on human rights and a halt to executions”.

Some sanctions against Iran over its poor human rights record are still in place, as Commissioner Cañete pointed out, saying this issue played a secondary role in the recent ´reset’ of the bilateral relations.
