Tsipras wants a deal to ‘tackle humanitarian crisis across EU’

Speaking to journalists after arriving at the European Council meeting on Thursday, newly-elected Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said that he is ‘confident’ that he EU leaders can agree on a way forward for Greece’s bailout programme.

“I’m very confident that all together we can find a mutually viable solution in order to heal the wounds of austerity, to tackle the humanitarian crisis across Europe and to bring back Europe to growth and social cohesion,” Tsipras said.

EU heads of state are holding an informal meeting in Brussels on Thursday. The situation in Ukraine, the euro, the Greek bailout, and the EU’s fight against terrorism are topping the summit’s agenda.
