Pinning hopes on renewable energies

The vision of a “solar future”, and occasionally also “a solar hydrogen economy”, is commonplace these days. Fuel cells on the basis of renewable energies could be pivotal to this. But economists, ecologists and politicians take very different views on the urgency of the issue, the right approach and the realistic time path. The European Union is aiming to double the proportion of renewables in total energy consumption to 12% by 2010. For this aim Brussels is meanwhile advocating various forms of “subsidisation”.
