After the March European Council conclusions, the European Commission will conduct an in-depth study of EU energy security and present a comprehensive plan for the reduction of EU energy dependence by June 2014.
“Energy must not be abused as a political weapon. Doing so will only backfire at those who try it. Temporary disruptions of gas supplies in 2006 and 2009 already provided a wake up call for the need of a common European energy policy. Since then, the Commission has done a lot to strengthen the EU energy security in terms of gas supply and to reduce the number of member states exclusively dependent on one single supplier.” European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said.
