EU leaders set climate, energy targets

EU leaders agreed on Thursday to reduce greenhouse emissions by 40% by 2030. They also agreed to increase renewables and energy efficiency by at least 27%.

A special “flexibility clause” was added to the final text, making it possible for the European Council to return to the targets after the UN summit in December 2015.

EU leaders met in Brussels on Thursday and Friday to reach an agreement on the new climate and energy policy framework for 2030. The last EU Summit chaired by Herman Van Rompuy also looked at the state of the European economy and address some foreign policy issues. Ebola was on the official agenda too.
