Renewable Energy Directive: three recommendations to unlock potential of district energy

District energy can play a key role in providing sustainable heating and cooling. The revision of the Renewable Energy Directive should ensure a regulatory framework that uses this potential.

Three provisions are key: modernisation of existing district energy networks, the recognition of unavoidable waste heat as valuable as renewable energy, and access for the surplus heat of commercial actors.
