Renewable Energy Directive: three recommendations to unlock potential of district energy

District energy can play a key role in providing sustainable heating and cooling. The revision of the Renewable Energy Directive should ensure a regulatory framework that uses this potential.

Three provisions are key: modernisation of existing district energy networks, the recognition of unavoidable waste heat as valuable as renewable energy, and access for the surplus heat of commercial actors.

Danfoss top three priorities for a successful EPBD revision:

  • Stop wasting energy in buildings with a more effective framework for optimised heating, cooling, ventilation systems
  • Empower people and businesses to control indoor temperature and comfort in homes and offices, and meet individual needs at least cost
  • Match actual with expected energy performance by driving rollout of smart energy monitoring and automated control systems
