Comments on: Hahn on Western Balkans: Exporting stability instead of importing instability EU news and policy debates across languages Wed, 10 Apr 2019 17:24:36 +0000 hourly 1 By: Jean-Guy GIRAUD Tue, 31 Jul 2018 13:22:29 +0000 This typical pro-enlargement plea is based on on-going confusions :

– EU and NATO memberships are two totally distinct endeavours : EU is about joining a far-reaching economic and political community leading to an “ever closer union of its peoples”,

– EU membership requires more than the bureaucratic passage of “chapters” – totally theoretical and without relevance or even knowledge of the population at large”,

– there must be other choices than “IN” or “OUT” of the Union. Intermediary solutions should be envisaged which attach those states to the Union without them being part of its Institutions,

– the EU 27 has reached a point where its unity – severely shaken by the 2004/2006 entry of 10 new and unprepared members – must be re-funded and strengthened. The entry of yet 6 or 8 new – and still more unprepared – members might be the last straw that kills the Union.
