Enlargement information campaign kicks off in Germany

The federal state of Lower Saxony in Germany is one of the first in the EU Member States to start an information campaign about enlargement.

The campaign started on 26 November 2001 and will run until 2003. The federal state of Lower Saxony has launched a specialwebsiteon enlargement, featuring information about the candidate countries, discussion forums, an online-service for publications, a quiz, and links.

Lower Saxony is the first federal state in Germany to launch an information strategy and campaign on EU enlargement. The federal state of Lower Saxony is co-operating with the European Commission, the European Parliament and regional organisations to provide information concerning the enlargement process.

The European Commission adopted a communication strategy on enlargement in May 2000 to be conducted both in the Member States and the candidate countries in the run-up to the enlargement.

According to Eurobarometer opinion polls, 65 per cent of the candidate countries citizens support enlargement, while support in the Member States is only 44 per cent.

The Commission will report on the first results of the enlargement communication strategy to the European Council at Seville in June 2002.
