Speaking at an international forum, German Chancellor Angela Merkel presented her vision of a future-EU based on common values.
The International Bertelsmann Forum held on 22-23 September 2006, brought together leading representatives from the international political and business arenas. Speakers, such as the German chancellor, EU Commission president and prime ministers of France, Belgium and Hungary came to discuss their strategies for the EU’s political future.
In her speech, Chancellor Merkel called for a new foundation of the EU based on common values. She also stressed that Europe should rethink its profile within the EU, as well as in relation to other countries. Merkel underlined her view on the final borders of the EU, saying that there should be “no promises for enlargement beyond the Balkans soon”.
With regard to the Constitutional treaty, Merkel emphasised Germany’s commitment to outline a road map until 2009 during its presidency beginning 2007.
