New project to promote use of French in enlarged EU

A deal to promote the use of French in the enlarged EU was signed on 11 January 2002 by the representatives of France, the French community in Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and the Agence intergouvernementale de la Francophonie.

The multiannual plan foresees action in the following areas:

  • French training for diplomats and representatives of the candidate countries and EU officials
  • French training for interpreters and translators from the candidate countries
  • training francophone interpreters and translators in the languages of the candidate countries
  • promotion of French as a working language of the European institutions, in the area of information technology and communication
