New Slovenian PM to seek earliest possible EU membership

A presentation of the new government’s program revealed a continuing commitment to early EU membership

The new Slovenian Prime Minister, Dr Janez Drnovsek, reiterated Slovenia’s commitment to the attainment of EU and NATO membership as soon as possible during his presentation of the new government’s program to the Slovenian Parliament.

It was reported by Radio Slovenia that Dr Drnovsek’s coalition sees the fulfilment of all accession criteria by the end of 2002, including the resolution of outstanding disputes with Croatia, as the key to early membership.

The new coalition government is the strongest to have existed in Slovenia’s short modern history which greatly increases its chances of meeting the self-imposed 2002 deadline.
