Romania organises global information society meeting

A Ministerial pan-European Conference in preparation of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) will take place in Bucharest (Romania) from 7-9 November 2002.

The Ministerial pan-European Conference in preparation of the
World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) will prepare a
common statement of the 55 Members of the UN Economic Commission
for Europe, that is to be forwarded to the World Summit. The
involvement of the EU in this regional conference was discussed on
9 October 2002 in Brussels. Several preparatory regional
conferences will focus on and analyse the situation and the
specific priorities of the respective regions.

The World Summit on the Information Society will
be organised under the patronage of the UN Secretary General, Mr
Kofi Annan, and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
The Summit will focus on the problems regarding the Information
Society and should result in the adoption of a Statement of
Principles and an action plan, in order to facilitate the
development of the Information Society and to identify solutions
for decreasing the differences between countries worldwide. The
first phase of the global summit will take place in Geneva from
10-12 December 2003. A follow up conference is scheduled to take
place in Tunis (Tunesia) in 2005.
