Schröder: EU could enlarge by the end of 2002

German Chancellor Schröder says the EU could admit new members by the end 2002.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder told the Slovak daily Pravda that the European Union could admit new members by the end of 2002, after completing its institutional reform.

In an interview with Pravda, Schröder said that the EU wants to conclude the intergovernmental conference on the EU’s internal reform by the end of this year at the December summit in Nice “in such a way that the EU will be internally ready to accept new members by the end of 2002”.
