MEPs call for constitutional reform in Turkey

MEPs expressed on Monday deep concern at recent developments in Turkey concerning allegations of high-level corruption. 

In a resolution passed on Monday on Turkey’s EU accession progress, the European Parliament stressed that constitutional reform must remain the top priority for the modernisation and democratisation of Turkey. The resolution regrets the removal of the prosecutors and police officers in charge of the original corruption investigations and calls on the authorities to ensure the proper functioning of the Court of Auditors, stressing the vital importance of an independent judiciary and the separation of powers,

MEPs also welcomed the joint declaration by the leaders of the two communities on re-launching the talks on the reunification of Cyprus, stressing the importance of reunification.
