AS IT HAPPENED: The summit that decided on EU top jobs

EU-28 leaders agreed on a package of four names for the bloc’s top jobs on 2 July but this needs to approved by the European Parliament, which is convening in Strasbourg this week, kicking off the new legislative term.

The Greens have already rejected the deal reached in the Council, under which German defence minister Ursula von der Leyen would become the new president of the European Commission. The Socialists, who called it “unacceptable”, and the Left might follow suit, making it difficult to reach the necessary majority in Strasbourg.
