EU leaders and US President Joe Biden came together on Thursday (24 March) to determine how much further they can tighten the screws on Moscow in the hope of halting its brutal invasion of Ukraine.
However, even before the summit in Brussels, there were clear signs that there is no unity inside the EU for a very ambitious package of additional sanctions that would include an immediate and total halt of all oil and gas imports from Russia.
Before the EU summit, NATO leaders discussed Russia’s invasion and humanitarian assistance for Ukraine. In between NATO and the EU summits, the G7 leaders, representing the world’s leading economies, also met in person in Brussels.
