Barroso plays down reports of large-scale aid for Ukraine

The European Union played down reports on Monday that it was working on a large aid package to help Ukraine through its economic crisis, saying it had no intention of getting into a bidding war with Moscow to buy Ukraine’s loyalty.

‘The idea that to sign an agreement, we should pay something, it is simply wrong and that is why the EU and member states very clearly in Vilnius stated that we are not going to a bidding competition to say who pays more for a signature of Ukraine; I don’t this is proper in terms of relation between EU and other countries.’ EU Commission president José Manuel Barroso said.
