Spanish MEP Iratxe García Pérez speaks out against misogyny

A video of Spanish PSOE MEP Iratxe García Pérez (S&D) speaking out against misogynistic remarks from a nationalist MEP went viral last week.

I am here to defend all European women from men like you,” she said in the European Parliament plenary session on 1 March after Polish right-wing MEP Janusz Korwin-Mikke argued that women should be paid less because they are “weaker, they are smaller, they are less intelligent”.

A video of the remarks has received 5.3 million views on Facebook.

8 March marks International Women’s Day, which celebrates the cultural, economic, social and political achievement of women. García Pérez told that gender bias still persists.

“We have to improve and we have to recognise that it is necessary in this moment to work for the equality policy, to work for the same rights and opportunities,” she said.
