Commission.

After several weeks of political uncertainty the
European Parliament on 18 November gave its vote of
approval to the new line-up of the Barroso
Commission.

The Commisison was approved with 449
voting in favour, 149 against and 82
abstaining. euractiv.com will follow up with more
in-depth coverage.

The three largest political groupings, the
conservative EPP, the socialist PES and the liberal
ALDE

group all gave Barroso their backing.

Prior to the planned vote in October it became
clear that the first Barroso team would
not secure sufficient backing. President Barroso
therefore withdrew his line-up, preferring
to reshuffle it rather than have his whole team
rejected. Since then the Italian commissioner Rocco
Buttiglione has been replaced by Franco
Frattini, the Latvian Ingrida Udre has been replaced
by Andris Piebalgs, and László Kovács has
been transferred from the energy portfolio to the
taxation portfolio.
