Commission presents new work programme 2001

Governance, quality of life, enlargement and new
economic and social agenda main priorities of Commission’s work
programme 2001

Governance, quality of life,
enlargement and the new economic and social agenda are
the main priorities of the Commission’s work programme
2001. These priorities are in line with the “Strategic
Objectives 2000-2005”, which the Commission adopted last
year.

With its upcoming White Paper on
Governance

, which should be published before the Gothenburg Summit
in June 2001, the Commission wants to promote new forms
of governance, bringing Europe closer to its citizens and
making it more democratic and transparent.

More regard for the environment,
respect for individual rights, food quality and mobility
are the elements of the Commission’s focus on
quality of life

.

Brussels also wants to launch a new
economic and social agenda

and speed up negotiations on
enlargement

.
