On Wednesday 26 January, Commission President Barroso will unveil
the Commission’s strategic priorities for the coming five years. As
expected, refocusing the Lisbon reform agenda is the overarching
credo of the Barroso team.

The European Parliament will be the first to debate the
Commission’s new strategic five-year planning and its 2005 work
programme on 26 January.

The Strategic Objectives 2005-2009 document bears the subtitle
“Europe 2010: Partnership for European Renewal. Prosperity,
Solidarity and Security”. It defines the broad policy objectives of
the Barroso Commission for the coming years. There are very few new
ideas compared to the Prodi Commission but it puts emphasis on
different areas.

The main goal of the Barroso Commission is to re-invigorate
the Lisbon Agenda and to put Europe back “on the path to
long-term prosperity”. Economic growth and
jobs
are the main cornerstones of the proposed
‘partnership for European renewal’. But the Commission also commits
itself in the strategic document to solidarity and
social justice
and wants special attention for
the security of its citizens. Finally, it
intends to make the EU a “stronger actor in the world economy”.

EURACTIV will have more in-depth coverage of the Commission’s
priorities in the coming days.
