MEPs say ‘yes’ to EU Constitution

In a vote on 12 January, the European Parliament has endorsed the
EU Constitution by a large majority.

The European Parliament has endorsed the Treaty Establishing the
Constitution for Europe. On 12 January, MEPs adopted a
report by draftsmen Richard Corbett (PES, UK) and Íñigo Méndez de
Vigo (EPP-ED, ES) by 500 votes in favour, 137 votes against
and 40 abstentions. The politically important vote has
no legal weight.

The ratification process for the treaty, which must be
ratified by all member states, is well under
way. The national parliaments of Lithuania and Hungary have
already ratified the treaty, in November and December 2004
respectively. Spain is to be the first country to hold a referendum
on 20 February.
