20 Visions for Europe: ‘We need to defend our European way’

This article is part of our special report 20 Visions for Europe.

20 Visions for Europe gathers unique visions from public officials, intellectuals, artists, diplomats, civic actors and business representatives.

The project is part of EURACTIV’s celebration of 20 years of free, independent reporting with European values at its core. The partner of the project is Stars4Media.

Transcript of the video:

Hello, my name is Markus Beyrer and I am the chief executive of BusinessEurope, the voice of European business. Let me share my vision for the future of Europe with you today.

While we in the business community are strong believers in the European way of life, in a world where ABC defines as: A for America first, B for Brexit, and C for a more assertive China.

But I remain optimistic.

So, what do we need to do? Well, we need to show the world that there is a third way, which is neither the lately very protectionist US American way nor the more state-driven Chinese way.

And, in order to do so, we need to become stronger ourselves. We need to be more united. We need to put a single market, which is the pearl of European integration, back on top of the list, and not give in to petty local protectionism.

We need to have a more strategic approach to industry policy and have an idea of how to catch up, and how to close the gap with some of our major competitors.

We need to defend global rules-based trade because this is the cornerstone of our wealth. And, looking to the future, we need to find ways to become the most innovative continent in the world once again.

We have made 50 proposals that we would like the incoming European Commission to tackle within the first 100 days.
