EU names envoy to Afghanistan

Foreign ministers from the 15 EU Member States
named a German diplomat, Klaus-Peter Klaiber, as their special
envoy to Afghanistan, on 10 December.

Mr Klaiber was Assistant Secretary-General of NATO until
mid-2000, responsible for political affairs. He will work
in close co-ordination with the Special Representative of
the United Nations, Lakhdar Brahimi.

The EU special representative will be in
charge of organising EU humanitarian aid to the region, the
reconstruction of the country and for contacts with the new
transitional authority in Kabul.
