It was illegal by the international law. Not unlike Kosovo, which the West prized open from Serbia on the fake news of genocide spread by the usual media. Insofar a freedom of opinion. I don’t speak Russian and cannot have a feel of what is happening there. Judging from the host of “free journalists” that regularly report on how Russia is going to the dogs in Western newspapers — but living in Russia — or on the host of media hostile to the government that keep popping up in our press, I would conclude that freedom of expression is granted in Russia. I have lived in a dictatorship for five years and I know what it is to have no press freedom. Insofar as the NGOs are concerned how many are actual NGOS and how many are funded and managed by the National Endowment for Democracy and have as their only goal to destabilize the country? Just recently the whole bogus of the White Helmets in Syria was blown up. A recent report by a USA archivist discovered, as if there were a need for it, that the CIA had kept contacts with the Neonazi movements in Ukraine. Reference to be supplied if requested. And look and behold, these are the same movements that gave the boost needed to engineer a coup d’etat in Ukraine.
P.S. I live in Italy, read UK, German and USA online newspapers, besides my own.

Ivan, please reflect on the mess May has made of the nations in the UK? Now even the Welsh are begging for a soft Brexit! You’re en route to little England pretty soon.

Carlo, you forget to mention that Putin illegally invaded a neighbouring country & annexed part of its territory, bans NGOs, bribes judges, snuggles up to the mafia & does not mind his oligarch friends getting rich while taxpayers suffer. Perhaps you should move to Russia to enjoy the perfect freedom of speech & assembly, the unimpeded right to privacy & ever-increasing prosperity there. By the way, I suggest you start reading some other newspapers than the British because your comparison makes little sense – that the UK tabloids are owned by Murdoch & replete with fake news and propaganda is a public secret.

georgi, shut up. What have the powerful Western media done in the past decade but to smear Putin? It rains? It’s Putin. There is increased tension in Ukraine? It’s Putin. Brexit wins? It’s Putin. The media have demonized Putin with a relish. I have never seen the like.
And please don’t come up with the fairy tale that our media are free and Russian media aren’t. Baloney! Our media are either in private property or in public property. Those in private property write what their owners want. Those in public property what their government want. Ever asked yourself Georgi why no newspaper or TV owned by Murdoch was agains the Iraq war? Or why Guardian, NYT and those of the same ilk have supported every mad capped military adventure the West has made?
Come on Georgi, shut up. And don’t report on the mindless words of Jakub Kalensky either. They do not make any sense.

P.S. I hope the KGB is reading this and sends me a big check. This is for Peter White who thinks that anyone who sees both sides is somehow paid by Moscow.
