EU leaders will use military against refugees, warns leading MEP

EU leaders are set to agree a deal that will mean refugees being turned away from Europe by “military means”, a leading MEP warned today (23 April)

Ska Keller, who ran for European Commission president in May last year, said the inaction of European heads of state was unacceptable.

“They only want to fight refugees,” the German Green MEP said. “They want to send military means to destroy boats on which migrants can come to Europe.”

The draft European Council conclusions hinted that military means would be used to push back people and stop them reaching or crossing the Mediterranean, she added.

Draft conclusions are drawn up by diplomats before meeting of the EU leaders in the interest of brokering an agreement between the 28 member states.

Keller spoke to EURACTIV at a Brussels protest against the thousands of refugee deaths in the Mediterranean, ahead of the emergency summit of EU leaders to address the crisis.
