Russia has joined the EU in its call for an independent UN investigation of the deadly chemical attack that the Syrian government allegedly carried out against civilians on Wednesday.

Unverified footage on Youtube released by Syrian rebel groups on Wednesday has shocked the international community. The videos show dead children    and civilians suffering from convulsions after the gas shell.

EU High representative Catherine Ashton has called for a “thorough and immediate” investigation into the alleged chemical attack near Damascus.

Ashton has also urged full cooperation by Syrian authorities in the investigation, saying that the UN mission “must be allowed full access to all sites’ on the Syrian territory.

US president Barack Obama said on Friday that if it’s proven that chemical weapons were used, it will “require America’s attention’.
