Tusk: The situation in the Mediterranean cannot continue

“We cannot accept that hundreds of people die when they try to cross the sea to Europe,” said European Council President Donald Tusk after a fishing boat capsized overnight off the Libyan coast, killing as many as 700 migrants.

Tusk’s comments came as he called an extraordinary EU summit on the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean, to be held on Thursday (24 April).

“The objective of the summit is to discuss what can member states and the EU institutions together can and must do to alleviate the situation now,” he added.
