On 2 October the management board of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) nominated Mr Geoffrey Podger as its Executive Director. Before the formal appointment can be made, however, the candidate will have to make a statement to the European Parliament. Mr Podger will likely appear before the Environment Committee of the EP before the end of October. Currently Mr Podger is the Chief Executive of the UK Food Standards Agency, set up in 2000. He has been responsible for its establishment and development.

The appointment of the Executive Director opens the way to the establishment of the remaining elements, the setting up of the Authority's Scientific Committee and Panels and the establishment of the Advisory Forum.
