Vice-president of the Spanish Society of Cardiology Dr. Lina Badimón has called for an increase of EU research and investment only targeted to tackle cardiovascular diseases.

“Horizon 2020 should address cardiovascular diseases separately, not within the group of chronic,” Badimón said at the European Congress of cardiovascular diseases in Barcelona on Tuesday.

Approximately four million people in Europe and 1.5 million people in the EU die of cardiovascular disease each year, according to the European Heart Network (EHN) and the European Society for Cardiology (ESC). The main forms of heart disease are coronary heart disease, and stroke.
