2004 Marie Curie Award winners announced

The Marie Curie Actions framework finances training and mobility of researchers in Europe. The activities are aimed at the development and transfer of research skills, improving researchers’ career prospects and the promotion of excellence in European research.

For only the second time, the EU has organised a Marie Curie Week. Held in Brussels in 2003, this year it took place in the hometown of Marie Curie in Poland. Many events, exhibitions and conferences presenting the life and work of Marie Curie were on show in Warsaw from 3 to 10 November 2004.

The 2004 Marie Curie Award ceremony was held on 7 November, Marie Curie’s birthday. The awards are part of a four-year programme (worth 1.58 million euros), which aims to improve mobility, training and career development opportunities for researchers in Europe.

This year, Marie Curie awards rewarded excellence in research on the creation of galaxies, the roots of human empathy, guantum physics, new catalysts and the science of materials. The five lauréats for 2004 include two Germans, two Italians and one Israeli researcher, each of whom received a prize of 50, 000 euros.
