Commission defines objectives for World Summit on Information Society

In a Communication adopted on 22 May, the Commission set out the EU’s key objectives for the 10-12 December 2003 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

The summit was endorsed by the UN General Assembly with a view to enabling the UN Member States to consider the development opportunities inherent in the new information and communications technologies. The summit will take place in Geneva in December 2003, to be continued in Tunis in November 2005.

According to the Commission, the EU's key objectives should be to:

  • establish the prerequisites for building the Information Society;
  • develop the right tools (strategies and frameworks);
  • seize the benefits of the Information Society for countries and individuals.

Issues relating to the WSIS will be on the agenda of the next meeting of the Telecommunications Council in Luxembourg on 5 June.
