The Future of Mobile Communications in the EU: Assessing the Potential of 4G

This paper from the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) says that UMTS will lead the future of mobile communications in Europe. It recommends consolidating 3G as a platform for 4G development.

 

The following abstract is taken from the study “The Future of Mobile Communications in the EU: Assessing the Potential of 4G” by the IPTS

This study looks at the milestones for future mobile communications systems, taking into account both short and long term prospects. This study analyses the influence that alternative technologies might have on the diffusion and take-up of 3G and concludes that, despite competition, UMTS will lead the future of mobile communications in Europe. The study recommends that 3G commercialization be stimulated by consolidating 3G as a solid platform for 4G development, integrating co-existing applications and continuously incorporating emerging standards.
