The Commission has proposed the creation of a Community Patent, which would be legally valid throughout the EU. At present, inventors have to get patents either on a national basis or through the European Patent Office (EPO) in Munich, which grants so-called European Patents.

The new Commission proposals lessen the burden on business to obtain a patent and provides a clear legal framework in case of disputes. It also reduces translation costs as these new patents would not need to be translated into all official languages, as is the case with the European Patents.
