MEPs debate migrant crisis after Juncker’s State of the Union address

On Wednesday (9 September), MEPs held a heated debate on how to tackle the refugee crisis in Europe after European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker delivered his first ever State of the Union Speech in Strasbourg.

“The refugees (are) fleeing from war, and we have to welcome them on our continent, otherwise Europe doesn’t exist as a concept, by a Union founded on solidarity,” leader of the S&D Group Gianni Pittella said.

“I think that we need a new initiative and I think in the framework of the United Nations to end the bloodshed in Syria, to stop terrorism, to make Syria again safe for the refugees, so that later on they can return to their homes,” ALDE leader Guy Verhofstadt added.
