No, the EU Commission has not given up on ‘mass immigration’

Contrary to claims seen on some far-right websites, the EU Commissioner for migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, does not believe that “mass immigration” is unstoppable. EURACTIV.com looks into the allegations as part of the “Fact or fake” series, in partnership with France 24.

“No corner of the European Union will escape mass immigration”. This is the shocking quote that was attributed to the Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs, Dimitris Avramopoulos, last December.

The quote was picked up by several websites close to far-right circles in Europe, including Fdesouche.com in France and LesObservateurs.ch in Switzerland, who both claim they lifted the quote from an opinion article authored by Avramopoulos for the news site Politico.

Well, as it turns out, the Commissioner actually never wrote this. Avramopoulos has indeed contributed an op-ed for Politico in which he states (quote): “We cannot and will never be able to stop migration” (unquote).

But the Greek Commissioner actually refers to migration at the global level, not at the European level. And at no moment does he actually use the expression “mass” immigration, remarks the French news agency AFP.

Now, one of the two websites, Fdesouche.com, seems to have admitted its mistake and has since corrected the headline of its article. But this is not the case of the Swiss website Les Observateurs, which maintained in its headline the fictional quote attributed to the Greek Commissioner.
