Yushchenko to launch Ukraine’s bid to join EU

Hot on the heels of his scheduled inauguration as president
of Ukraine this weekend, Viktor Yushchenko aims
to launch a campaign to bring his country into the
EU.

Ukraine’s president-elect, Viktor Yushchenko, plans
to bring his five-year action plan before the European
Parliament on 25 January, in which he wants to spell out
his “strategic goal” of achieving full EU membership for his
country, a top Yushchenko aide was reported as saying. According to
the aide, who was quoted by the Interfax news agency, the
president-elect will “clearly convey Ukraine’s position on European
integration”.

Yushchenko, meanwhile, was confirmed by the country’s Supreme
Court on 19 January as the winner of the 26 December presidential
elections. The ruling is final and cannot be appealed.
