ATHENS – Good US-Greece relations

The Greek government is very pleased with the visit of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the announcements he made from the Souda port-military base in Crete.

Pompeo had chosen to visit Greece twice in a very short period of time because his  plans for a corresponding visit to Turkey fell through, despite a balanced diplomatic approach to the two neighbouring countries being tradition, sources said.

In Athens, this is being interpreted as a clear message of the new US policy in the region.

“I am leaving Greece today, grateful for the excellent progress we have made in US-Greek relations since my last visit last year. I welcome the role of Greece as a factor of stability in the region”, said Pompeo in a social media post.

The Greek government also says that the permanent mooring of the USS Hershel “Woody” Williams helicopter carrier and the upgrade of the (joint US-GR, airforce and navy) military base in Souda port are important diplomatic assets.

Another sign of good relations was that after talks with government ministers in Northern Greece, the US Secretary of State and his wife stayed for two nights at the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ personal family residence in Chania, Crete, and watched the US presidential debate together.
