ATHENS – Greeks fume at Spanish socialist MEP

At a meeting of the European Parliament’s committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, Spanish Socialist MEP Domenec Ruiz Devesa accused the Greek government of “extreme-right” handling of the migration crisis as well as illegal pushbacks.

Greece’s Minister of Civil Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, reacted strongly, asking the MEP to withdraw his statements, saying that the country has suffered from the migration issue and emphasised that in the last elections it kicked the far-right Golden Dawn party  out of the Greek parliament.

He added that Greece is essentially the only gateway for migrants to Europe and called on the Spanish MEP if he really wanted to help the situation, to ask the socialist Spanish government to take part of the burden the Greek people have been carrying over the years.
