Ruling New Democracy party (EPP) cannot find a rapporteur to speak positively about the three memoranda of understanding with North Macedonia that need to pass through the Greek parliament. Read more.
When in opposition, New Democracy fiercely opposed the North-Macedonia name change deal which was pushed forward by the then leftist government of Alexis Tsipras.
When it took the power, the conservative party changed entirely its attitude and even supported the EU path of the small Balkan country.
Last week, North Macedonia’s PM Zoran Zaev met with his Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis and agreed on three memoranda of understanding as part of the name change deal. These MoUs need to go through the parliament and Tsipras has asked for a roll-call vote.
“I expect 158 apologies,” Tsipras ironically said.
However, Greek media report that New Democracy is unable to find a rapporteur for the vote and the official excuse is there is no rush for the vote.
