Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet French President Emmanuel Macron in Corsica on Thursday (10 September), on the sidelines of a meeting of Europe’s southern countries. Moreover, EU Council chief Charles Michel will visit Athens on 15 September.
Michel recently spoke by phone with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and expressed his full solidarity with Greece, warning Turkey that if it doesn’t de-escalate, sanctions will be an option.
Michel, however, also suggested the organisation of an international conference to discuss Mediterranean issues with the participation of Ankara.
The news was not well received in Athens, considering that Turkish warships are still in Greek waters.
At the same time, Ankara does not recognise Cyprus and only agrees to sit at the same table if Turkish-Cypriot representatives are also present.
EURACTIV asked the European Commission whether EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell was aware of the initiative, to which Commission spokesman Peter Stano answered positively, but declined comment on whether they had asked Turkey to sit at the same table with Cyprus.
