Romania’s socialist party PSD is pushing for a 40% pension increase, despite the government’s opposition to such a massive rise with a ballooning budget deficit.
The labour commissions in the Romanian Parliament amended the budget revision law that specifies the pensions will increase by only 14% as of September.
To be adopted, the change needs the OK of both chambers of the Parliament. The centre-right government introduced the change of the pension law in the budget revision adopted in August, while also widening the estimate for the budget deficit from 6.7% to 8.6% of the GDP, in the context of the COVID-19 crisis.
Romanian politicians are currently campaigning for local elections to be held on 27 September, with general elections scheduled for early December.
