Bulgarian security services wiretapped 32 politicians in opposition before parliamentary elections in April, opposition politician Atanas Atanasov said on Thursday.

The acquired materials were shredded last week and destroyed by the interior ministry’s internal security directorate, according to information presented by Atanasov.

“These people, led by [former prime minister Boyko] Borissov and this cohort of special services, have forgotten themselves. In recent years, they have committed atrocities that must be unmasked,” said Atanasov.

“The Bulgarian public should understand by what means and methods Borissov’s power is strengthened […] Publicity and transparency should be given to these hidden mechanisms for strengthening Borissov’s state,” he added.

The national office for control of special intelligence means announced it will discuss the issue during its next meeting.

As elected MPs were unable to form a government after the election in April a caretaker government has been put in charge until early elections in June. (Krassen Nikolov | EURACTIV.bg)
