The number of coronavirus infections rose Wednesday by the highest daily figure in more than five months, government data showed. Almost 4,000 new infections were reported and the hospitals are again getting a high number of COVID patients, including in the intensive care units.
The number of cases will rise exponentially, as the highly contagious Delta variant has become dominant in Romania as well, said Valeriu Gheorghita, the head of the COVID vaccination campaign.
“A single sick person could provoke the infection of up to 390,000 people in a two-month interval, on high exposure in an unvaccinated population, where distancing rules are not respected and people do not wear masks,” Gheorghita said.
Romania has a low vaccination rate, and half of the population still has no immunity against COVID either through vaccination or due to having contracted the virus, the campaign coordinator also said.
