With more than 2.2 million Croatians having so far received the COVID-19 vaccine, the country registered its first vaccine-related death, the country’s agency for medicinal products and medical devices (HALMED) confirmed Tuesday.

The 33-year-old man died 12 days after receiving the Vaxzevria vaccine, formerly known as the AstraZeneca jab. The report on the case was first received in March 2021, after which extensive medical checks and analyses were conducted.

HALMED confirmed the man died of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome and assessed the causal relationship between the vaccine’s side effects and his death as probable.

No other cases of this vaccine side effect or any other fatal outcomes have been reported so far.

Of the 562,938 doses of the Vaxzevria vaccine administered as of Monday in Croatia, 1,584 reports of suspected side effects were filed, 81% of which were mild or moderate and lasted several days.
