EU INSTITUTIONS – EU emergency fund will need €5 billion, says leading MEP

An EU Strategic Stockpile will need €5 billion to realistically tackle climate change and pandemics, Nicolae Ștefănuță, member of the European Parliament’s Environment and Public Health Committee, has told EURACTIV.com.

“None of us, no matter how rich we are, will really be able to deal with climatic catastrophe or pandemic event,” he said.

The Romanian MEP from the centrist Renew Europe Group explained that Europe needs a US-style Strategic Stockpile that will finance a fleet of airplanes, helicopters, medical devices, medicines and vaccines.

“If after the pandemic we have a climatic event this summer destroying forests, something similar to Australia, this will kill European confidence no matter where it’s going to take place, Greece, Austria or Romania,” he said.

He added that the previous €480 million budget has not been enough considering that during the crisis Europe had to come up with an amending budget of €300 million just to buy masks and ventilators.

“If you really want to talk about business, €5 billion will be needed. An airplane costs €40 million and a helicopter more or less the same amount.”
