The French government had complained that the new permits introduced requirements on the time vessels can spend in fishing waters and volume of catches, which had not been included in the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and the UK. The EU side requested a three-month extension to give time for an agreement to be reached. The row had prompted the UK to send Royal Navy patrol vessels into Jersey’s waters in May, with France threatening to take retaliatory measures.
